Informed Choice/Evidenced-Based Decision Making

Our role as midwives practicing the Midwives Model of Care is to support a woman in her own ways of moving through pregnancy, labor, and birth. We work with her to promote a healthy pregnancy, and provide education to help her make informed decisions about her own care. Together with our clients, we carefully monitor the progress of the pregnancy and labor, and recommend appropriate management if complications arise. The key elements of this education, monitoring, and decision making process are based on Evidence-Based Practice refers to a thoughtful integration of the best available evidence, coupled with clinical expertise. As such it enables midwives and their clients to address healthcare questions with an evaluative and qualitative approach. Evidence based decisions flow from a process that includes the assessment of current and past research, clinical guidelines, and other information resources in order to determine the best course of care.Evidenced-Based Practice and Informed Choice refers to the rights of healthcare consumers to be fully informed about testing or treatment options so that they can then make an educated “choice” among those options.Informed Choice. In order to make informed choice decisions in a timely manner, we strive to provide you with information regarding your options in a way that naturally flows with the progression of your prenatal, birth, and postpartum period.


Prenatal Care

As you begin care with Mountain View Midwives, you will be given opportunities to discuss options for a wide variety of prenatal screening that is currently available through the standard medical maternity model of care. Most tests or procedures that are available to pregnant women today carry with them likelihoods for further testing, treatments, or interventions that we will encourage you to consider prior to making your decisions. Risks and benefits usually exist for the choice to test or treat a condition as well as the choice to decline testing or treatment. Postpartum Care

RHOGAM FOR RH NEGATIVE WOMEN

Postpartum Rhogam is a vaccine that is recommended by the medical model to be given within 72 hours of birth to all women who have Rh negative blood type. Our practice can help you obtain this vaccine through your family physician or pediatrician.


Newborn Care

As new parents, you will soon become familiar with this process of interpreting outside information and combining it with your internal “parental knowing” as you make decisions about every aspect of your child’s life. Together with your pediatrician, we can help you with information and advice regarding the healthcare needs of your newborn baby…the next 18 years will be up to you!
